CAN2024
An Ivorian-style opening ball
which honors all of Africa
For the second time in its history, after 1984,
Ivory Coast welcomed
the 34th edition of the
African Cup of Nations
under a strong cultural symbolism.
Saturday January 13, 2024 marked the official launch of the 34th
edition of the African Cup of Nations, at the Olympic stadium in Ebimp,
Ivory Coast. In the presence of the Ivorian Head of State Alassane
Ouattara, his counterparts from Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and
representatives of other African states. Without forgetting the
remarkable presence of Gianni Infantino, President of FIFA, Dr Patrice
Motsepé, President of the African Football Confederation, including
African and world football legends.
Ivory Coast was fully revealed to the world through an opening show
representative of its vast cultural heritage. A performance skillfully
orchestrated by the choreographer Georges Momboye, who, thanks to his
know-how, perfectly combined anthropomorphism and the magnificent
Ivorian vegetation. A very well executed and synchronized choreography.
Anthropomorphism is the art of designing (African) deities or animals
in the image of men, while thereby giving them human behavior. Viewers
from all over the world benefited from a breathtaking spectacle rich in
all the cultural diversity of Côte d’Ivoire. Other world-famous stars
such as Dadju, Tayc, José, Magic Système, Yemi Aladé and the Egyptian
artist Ramadan brought a slightly more urban color to this conservative
opening ceremony.
The Ivorian artist José, author of the accused title “Diplôme” opened
the stage productions, assisted by the duo Dadju and Tayc. Congolese
artist Daju performed his most famous songs. The show closed with the
CAN anthem composed by Magic System, Yemi Alade from Nigeria and
Egyptian artist Ramadan. They were all present on stage, to put on the
show, supported by an enthusiastic audience, mostly dressed in clothing
and makeup in the colors of the local team, orange.
The dance scenes unanimously celebrated the national cultureas well as
certain infrastructures built before the competition.
At the end of this competition, the Ivory Coast selection became
African champions for the third time in its history, on Sunday February
11, 2024. It was decorated and awarded during a ceremony at the
presidency of Abidjan. Each player received a bonus from the President
of the Republic, Alassane Ouattara, in the amount of
50 million CFA francs (76,000 euros) and a villa of the same value.
