The
Nguon conquers the World
In
Cameroon, the Nguon
-cultural
heritage of the Bamoun people-
joined the exhaustive list of UNESCO's
intangible cultural heritage
as a set of “rituals of
governance”
As
a reminder, the Bamoun people are located in West Cameroon, more
precisely in Foumban. With a view to defending the candidacy of Ngoun,
the Minister of Arts and Culture, Bidoung Mkpatt, led the Cameroonian
delegation to the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for
the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which was held in
Kasane, Botswana on Tuesday, December 5, 2023.
The
latter, being one of the major cultural events of Cameroon, not only
for its endurance over time, because it is a festival which dates back
more than 600 years. But also, for its purely traditional aspect.
These
two aspects can sufficiently justify its membership today in the list
of more than 960 properties, registered and distributed in 157 States
of the world, through the United Nations Educational Organization.
Organization, which also campaigns for the lasting and sincere support
of peoples.
The
news of this
inscription, which is the pride of Cameroonians and more specifically
of the Bamoun people, was relayed to us via the organization's X
account: “New inscription on the List of Intangible Heritage: Nguon,
governance rituals and associated expressions in the Bamoun community,
Cameroon. Congratulations ! ".
It is important to emphasize that this registration is a boon
for
several sectors of activity, notably tourism and the economy.
